Roscosmoe Lab

Core team: dr. Xavier Bally and Ewen Chardronnet

Roscosmoe Lab is a transdisciplinary art & science platform based at the Roscoff Marine Station (France), where artists collaborate with marine biologists to explore the photosymbiotic worm Symsagittifera roscoffensis as a potential model for space research. Bridging marine biology, space ecology, intermedia art, and the anthropology of science, Roscosmoe fosters experimental research protocols and creative outcomes at the intersection of Earth and space.

Highlights include:

  • A space mission in Japan studying S. roscoffensis and its Japanese counterpart with support from European and Japanese research institutions.
  • Umi No Oya, a feature documentary exploring the cultural and ecological legacy of Japanese seaweed farming and its planetary implications.
  • The ANIMALGA exhibition in Okayama, Japan, engaging visitors with photosymbiosis and marine microalgae through art, science, and hands-on workshops.
  • Roscoffensis I/O, an installation by artist Miha Godec combining artificial intelligence and symbiotic worms to explore bio-AI interactions and autonomous life systems for space environments.
