Roscosmoe Lab: Animalga exhibition at the Sci-Pia science museum of Okayama, Japan
3 – 17 May 2025, SCI-PIA MUSEUM, Japan
ANIMALGA is an interactive exhibition dedicated to marine biology, with a special focus on tiny animals living in association with microalgae. These microalgae reside in the animal tissues under their skin. This unique combination is known as photosymbiosis. These long-term associations are crucial features of marine biodiversity. However, intriguing green flatworm populations found on sandy beaches around the world are now being investigated to understand the coexistence of such different organisms: animal species on one side and photosynthetic microalgae on the other. The current research aims to uncover how these combined marine plant-animal systems could inspire the production of oxygen for future space shuttle applications. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will explore the living modes of flatworms. With the aid of 20 posters, documentaries, art/science creations, and hands-on workshops utilizing microscopes, they will uncover the secrets of these fascinating plant-animals.
